An ultrasound scan, sometimes called a sonogram, is a procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of part of the inside of the body. An ultrasound scan can be used to monitor an unborn baby, diagnose a condition, or guide a surgeon during certain procedures.
Advantages of Ultrasounds:
- Ultrasound captures highly detailed images of the soft tissues that do not usually appear well on X-rays. They also enable real-time imaging.
- As Ultrasound scans use high frequency sound waves, they are an extremely safe and convenient procedure. The patient is fully awake during the procedure and no discomfort is experienced.
What conditions can be detected by ultrasound?
Ultrasound can help providers diagnose a wide range of medical issues, including:
- Abnormal growths, such as tumors or cancer.
- Blood clots.
- Enlarged spleen.
- Ectopic pregnancy (when a fertilized egg implants outside of your uterus).
- Gallstones.
- Liver and pancreas
- Aortic aneurysm.
- Kidney or bladder stones.
- Cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation).
- Varicocele (enlarged veins in the testicles).
